Trauma: Archetype of chaos
19/04/10 || Smalley
Wait, this is the album I saw certain GD’ers praising/getting excited about? Tell the truth, Trauma (our Trauma) put you up to it, didn’t he? I guess I shouldn’t have expected any better from him, or from any band named after that douche (heh, you know I love ya, Trauma), but seriously, “Archetype of mediocrity” is no more impressive or memorable than any one of the legions of death metal label-sent records we get flooded with on GD.
The opener here has nothing but an ambient sort of guitar work, and was passable, but then the second track kicked in with middling, stop-start, metal-core-ish riffing (yuk!), and muddled, generic death growling. The rhythm guitar tone is similarly bland, with that sort of mildly-gritty-but-still-slick tone to it that so many metal bands are using today. Things didn’t get any better after that, with overly-repetitive songwriting all around that never really came together , and while its basic intensity was decent, it still definitely needed work.
Well, despite an irritatingly loud sound, at least the drumming’s good here, and the solos are simply incredible; they really should’ve put more solos on here, a lot more. In fact, maybe the lead guitarist/drummer should just leave Trauma and start up their own band? It’d probably be better than the averageness on display here. Anyway, Trauma does have the potential to become a dark, bad-ass death metal band, but as for right now, no cigar.
